What are the Google Webmaster Guidelines?

The Google Webmaster Guidelines, now known as Google Search Essentials, are a comprehensive set of best practices recommended by Google for website owners and managers. Adherence to these guidelines ensures that a website is properly crawled, indexed, and ranked by Google’s search engine.

These guidelines comprise two major sections: “Technical Requirements” and “Quality Guidelines”, with an additional “Key Best Practices” section that summarizes the fundamentals of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

The Technical Requirements specify the basic prerequisites for a web page:

  1. The page must be discoverable and accessible to Google’s crawler.
  2. The page must be live - returning a 200 (OK) HTTP status code.
  3. The page must contain meaningful text that does not violate any quality guidelines.
